Authorities Said a Charlotte County Deputy was Airlifted to the Hospital After He was Dragged by a Car and Run Over During a Traffic Stop Early Thursday Morning.
Just before 1:30 a.m., Charlotte County deputies conducted a traffic stop on a 2017 white Infiniti that had a tail light out.
During interrogation, the driver gave deputies a fake name. According to Sheriff Bill Prummell, further investigation identified the driver as Glen Alonzo Steele.
Steele reportedly had a warrant out for driving with a suspended license. Deputies allegedly found cocaine, meth, and pills in Steele’s vehicle.
Before they were able to take him into custody, Steele ran from deputies and managed to jump into the passenger side of his vehicle.
Corporal Brad Combs chased Steele and struggled with him in the car. The corporal used his taser on Steele, but Steele was able to get the car into gear and took off, dragging Combs alongside the vehicle, the sheriff said.
Deputies believe that at some point, Combs was run over by the vehicle.
The corporal suffered compound fractures and was airlifted to the hospital where he is undergoing treatment.
Deputies continued to chase Steele into North Port where he rolled his vehicle several times and crashed into a canal in the area of Bessemer Avenue and Florala Street.
Steele was airlifted to Sarasota Memorial where he is undergoing treatment for a serious head injury.
According to the sheriff’s office, Steele has a violent history out of Pennsylvania.
No further information was immediately available.
