It was reported that at least five vehicles were involved in an accident on Northeast Pine Island Road near the intersection with Barrett Road.
Report by Florida Highway Patrol says a 32-year-old Stefan Lippke was traveling on Northeast Pine Island Road. She was in the outside lane just west of the intersection of Barrett Road. A second vehicle was traveling westbound on Pine Island Road in the inside lane and was ahead of Lippke’s car.
Report says the third vehicle driven by 72-year-old Carolyn Erwin was traveling in the same direction as the others on Pine Island Road in the outside lane, ahead of the second vehicle. A fourth vehicle was reportedly traveling westbound on Pine Island Road in the outside lane, directly ahead of Erwin’s vehicle. A fifth vehicle was traveling west on Pine Island Road in the outside lane, directly ahead of the fourth vehicle.
There was congestion further west of all 5 vehicles. Upon approaching the congestion, all vehicle’s except for Lippke’s slowed to a stop in their respective lanes. Consequently, the front portion of Lippke’s vehicle collided with the second vehicle causing a series of other collisions involving Erwin’s vehicle as well as the fourth and fifth vehicle.
Erwin died as a result of the crash, but no others in the crash were injured.
An investigation is ongoing and charges are pending.
