Two separate fatal accident has been reported to cause significant delays just east of the Dames Point Bridge, and near the Nassau Sound Bridge to Amelia Island, A1A.
Florida Highway Patrol reported that one person died and another victim was taken from the scene to a local hospital after the first crash near the Nassau/Duval County line. At the initial accident, the driver of a Dodge Journey crossed the center line of A1A heading north into the path of a southbound car. The Dodge driver struck the southbound car head-on.
Report says the driver of the other car, a 47-year-old woman from Fernandina Beach, died and has not been publicly identified. The driver of the Dodge Journey sustained serious injuries.
Few moments later, Jacksonville Fire Rescue reportedly respond to another accident on Heckscher Drive at Browns Creek that had traffic shut down in both directions. FHP says 48-year-old Irin Bennett of Fernandina Beach crossed the center line in a Toyota Tacoma and struck a vehicle head-on. Report says Bennett died at the scene.
FHP reported that a 32-year-old Anna Merkel and her 1-year-old baby were in a GMC Acadia going the other direction when the accident happened. Merkel is in serious condition, and the child is expected to be survive.
The accidents are still under investigation.
